4/22/12: Back still aching like a motherfucker....I tell the wife I'll go to Dominick's but swing by the IHB...just in time for a pair of SD20s heading the CASE farm equipment train to the NS for export to China or something...These engines! I love them...They will too soon be gone for new GENSET Shit!

I wouldn't refer to Gensets as shit even if they don't have quite the character of a vintage hood unit. Gensets are providing railroads with the ability to burn less fuel to do the same amount of work, and they're far easier to maintain. I lament the passing of vintage units just like every other railfan, but to use such a harsh word to disparage a new technology that's making the railroad industry more sustainable and less dependent on fossil fuels is an insult to a great effort by private industry to help the planet, which is more than most American industries are willing to do on their own accord.

Maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh regarding Gensets, but from what I understand they don't have the tractive effort of a classic SD20...I guess Iam a cynical member of Gen -X when I agree with you in principle but the way the USA is going emmissions controls on locomotives mean little to the more sensible option of a de-centralized economy and power structure. You Germans may understand the difference between "Gemeinschaft & GesellSchaft" but Amerikans care more about consuming and comfort. With that in mind I certainly RESPECT your ideals but I see Amerika in a pathetic imperial decline and an SD20 vs Genset will make not one bit of difference (unfortunately).... I agree in principle, but I am just one person trying to eke out a living who enjoys old locomotives.
