8/11/89: On a hazy August day at the end of the 80s, Chessie painted GP40-2 and GP39-2 lead a transfer into Cicero Yard. The Ogden Avenue Bridge is still where it belongs over the east throat of the yard.
Thinking about the Chessie reminds me of the good days of rail fanning. I'm 26..but I can remember things going back to 1991. Anyway..where some of my family lives in Massachusetts...there is a freight and commuter rail line nearby. I remember seeing all the great Conrail units and there were a couple of times I saw some Chessie units going around.
Just to think that all the freight units I see up there now are either CSX or Norfolk Southern...how times have changed.
Seeing "foreign power" here in NYC and in Massachusetts is a very rare sight these days. In the last 13 years, I have seen two Canadian Pacific SD40-2 units running on the New York Crossharbor Railroad and in the Fresh Pond Yard about 5 times tops. Last year, I saw a GATX unit running on the New York Crossharbor Railroad.
I have heard that some Union Pacific units have made their way into Massachusetts. I'd love to see one there. Wow..I hope the next time some KCS units go through your area...you can get some photos of them.
