I miss the DME/ICE, what about the RCPE. I caught some ex-DME/ICE SD40-2s on a transfer into the Belt Railway in Chicago.

Wasn't the CNW the only railroad that used those?

I want to hear one. :XD:

I think so. At first I thought they were some sort of freaky headlight then it dawned on me, a freakin' bell!

headlight makes sense, Frisco, and SP for example had weird nose headlight arrangements.

Got a pic somewhere of a high-nose SP Geep in Ogden that must have had six headlamps on it, including a Mars light! :XD:

SP had the best lights! Like what you are describing. Remember the first time I noticed it around 1983 or so at night parked by the old BN in Berwyn and couldn't figure out the two lights/ Top lights were typical brights but the nose mounted ones were flashing on and off. Mind you this was way before boring ditch lights and SP almost never ran on BN back then as far east as Chicago. One of my fav railroading moments that I recall with such fondness.

I miss it too. Even though the Evil Empire bought it my freshman year of high school. My dad worked as a car knocker at Proviso in the 70's, and i ended up on the former CNW in '04. Back then there were still quite a few locos still in the green and gold, though most were patched. One of my first trips as a set up conductor was on a 6800 series CNW SD40. Might have been one of these!

"Evil Empire" I love it (that phrase I mean!) CN I guess is the "evil northern empire"

they are the red unholiness of the frozen north! Slowly taking this country over one regional railroad or short line at a time...

Couldn't have said it better myself. At one point about UP, "what cool railroad will it swallow next in its big mustard yellow ravenous maw".

Nice shot. It was a sad day when the C&NW was bought. I grew up around that railroad.

I grew up near the BN so I always loved seeing CNW as it was "exotic"!
